The global healthcare community is now grappling with the long-term effects of COVID-19, commonly referred to as Long COVID. Among these, Avascular Necrosis (AVN), a condition marked by bone death due to inadequate blood supply to the hip joint, is emerging as a concerning sequela.
Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central have been at the forefront in addressing this issue. They recently treated two patients, Mr. Dhananjay Vasant Wagaskar and Ms. Ragini Yadav, who were diagnosed with AVN after experiencing severe hip pain.
Mr. Dhananjay had a history of COVID-19 and had been treated with steroids, while Ms. Ragini had experienced flu-like symptoms before the onset of hip pain.
Dr. Mudit Khanna, an Orthopaedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, points out that early diagnosis is critical. Though X-rays may not detect AVN initially, MRI scans can help identify the condition.
Most patients with AVN at Wockhardt Hospitals, including Mr. Wagaskar and Ms. Yadav, underwent successful Total Hip Replacement Surgery, which uses Ceramic bearings. This procedure has proved highly effective in mitigating pain and enhancing mobility.
Wockhardt Hospitals’ work in this domain is a testament to the medical community’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by Long COVID.
