Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai saves lives, one transplant at a time – celebrates 500+ Solid Organ Transplants milestone

Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai is proud to announce that it has achieved a historic milestone by completing 535 solid organ transplants. This feat has been achieved due to the cutting-edge multi-organ transplantation program, one of the largest and most comprehensive at the Apollo Institutes of Transplant, at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai.

Beginning 2017, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai has performed 327 kidney transplants, 200 liver transplants, and 8 heart transplants.

One of the key aspects that set Apollo apart is the specialized transplant teams that offer individualized treatment to transplant patients. The integrated team approach includes transplant surgeons, nephrologists, hepatologists/gastroenterologists, paediatric gastroenterologists, paediatric surgeons, anaesthetists, critical care specialists, radiologists, physicians, pulmonologists, infectious disease consultants, immunologists, pathologists, transplant coordinators, trained ICU ward nurses, and liaison officers. All of these professionals are supported by life-saving advanced intensive care technology.

Dr. Prof. Darius Mirza, Lead Consultant Liver and HPB Program, Apollo Hospitals Western Region expressed his immense pride and satisfaction at this achievement, “Organ transplantation is life-saving for patients with advanced organ disease, and substantially improving the quality of life for these patients. At Apollo, the Liver Transplant Department has always strived for excellence. With 200 liver transplants under our belt, of which 65 have been performed in children, we are making significant strides in combating liver disease and offering our patients a chance at a healthier and more fulfilling life. Our multi-disciplinary approach ensures that we leave no stone unturned in providing the best care and ensuring successful outcomes for our liver transplant patients.”

Dr. Amol Kumar Patil, Sr Consultant, Urology, Uro –Oncology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery, Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai said, “Our kidney transplant program at Apollo has been a cornerstone in transforming the lives of patients with renal failure. Through innovation, dedication, and unparalleled patient care, we have successfully completed over 300 kidney transplants. Each procedure signifies a renewed lease of life and embodies our unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of our patients.”

Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav, Consultant, CVTS, Heart & Lung Transplant Surgery Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai said, “Performing heart transplants is a delicate medical procedure that demands precision, expertise, and compassion. At Apollo, we are dedicated to giving hope and new beginnings to patients with heart failure. Each heart transplant we perform is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the relentless pursuit of medical excellence that defines our team.”

Apollo’s solid organ transplant program which includes heart, lung, kidney, and liver transplants, has specialized organ transplant teams that work tirelessly to provide individualized, comprehensive care to our patients with an integrated approach to deliver success rates of 99.9% for kidney transplants and over 90% for liver transplants. The high success rates are a testament to the team’s dedication and the advanced medical technology at their disposal. This has led to faster recovery and better post-surgery outcomes such as pain control and quick healing of scars. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, transplants continued to save lives due to strict infection control protocols being followed.

Mr. Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Apollo has always been a pioneer in healthcare, and this milestone is a testament to our commitment to saving lives. Our 535 transplants including 18 kidney transplants and 12 liver transplants from International Markets are not just a number; it signifies the gift of life, the joy of families reuniting, and patients getting a second chance at life. Apollo’s transplant program is a beacon of hope with each patient whose life has been saved or improved through a transplant becoming a source of great pride and motivation for the entire Apollo family. We will continue to work relentlessly to make organ transplantation more accessible to ensure that no life is lost due to the unavailability of organs.”

Apollo has been a pioneer in organ transplant surgery with its first successful kidney transplant in 1984 and since then there has been no looking back. From developing the first organ transplant registry in India to performing landmark organ transplant surgeries, Apollo has been at the forefront of delivering quality outcomes. Led by renowned surgeons, the team is supported by specialists from various fields, including nephrologists, hepatologists, urologists, intensivists, radiologists, transplant coordinators, social workers, psychiatrists, and anaesthesiologists.

Organ transplants, especially cadaver organ transplants are vital in a country like India where there is a high demand for organ donations. The significance of Apollo’s 500 transplant milestone is underscored by the fact that every year, over 500,000 people in India need an organ transplant, including 40,000 needing a liver transplant and around 200,000 needing a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, only about 5% of this demand is met due to a shortage of organs and limited access to transplantation services, and thousands lose their lives waiting for a life-saving transplant.
